Good news for anyone who needs more time to prepare a Spotlight Awards entry: PRSA Oregon has extended the deadline to Monday, August 31, at 11:59 p.m. Nominations for our Awards of Distinction are also due August 31. And while we’re on the topic, save the date for the big event: Wednesday, November 18, at 5:30 p.m.
August is a very busy month for our chapter! Be sure to catch our webinar this Wednesday, August 12, “From Panic to Purpose: The Plan, the Pivot, the Purpose.”
Floricel Gonzalez of ID Agency will share candid lessons from her first five years in public relations, including the challenges, unexpected pivots and opportunities that helped shape her career. Early-career professionals will gain practical guidance, and more experienced communicators will pick up some tips for mentoring.
On Tuesday, August 18, we’ll gather at McMenamins on the Columbia in Vancouver for a Communicators Social and informal Meet the Media conversation with Patrick Malee, Business and Lifestyle Editor at The Columbian. It’s a great opportunity to connect with fellow communicators while learning more about what’s happening in the newsroom and the stories shaping Southwest Washington.
On Tuesday, August 25, at 5 p.m., PRSA Oregon is excited to welcome the National Millennial and Gen Z Community to Greater Portland. If you missed the Gen Z panel at our Northwest Communicators Conference in April, here’s another opportunity to hear directly from emerging professionals about their experiences and perspectives.
Calling all pros who are considering earning your Accreditation in Public Relations: Now’s the time! If you’re ready to deepen your strategic expertise, PRSA Oregon’s APR preparation classes begin September 17.
Read on for more details about what’s happening this month and next. Keep in mind that September is Ethics Month.
Whether you’re preparing an award entry, building your career, pursuing your APR or navigating changes in our profession, PRSA Oregon is here to support you. Bookmark our events page and join us as we continue building community.

WEBINAR — SEPTEMBER 15
AI and the Future of Ethical PR: Perspectives Across the Profession
Tuesday, September 15 | Noon–1 p.m. PT | Free for PRSA chapter members | $20 for nonmembers
| | |
Artificial intelligence is changing how public relations professionals research, develop content, advise leaders, manage reputations and engage audiences. As adoption accelerates, communicators must navigate questions about accuracy, transparency, bias, accountability and public trust while also understanding how to use AI productively.
Join PRSA Oregon for a panel discussion about how AI is reshaping the profession and what its ethical use requires. The discussion will bring together different perspectives from across the profession to explore the opportunities AI creates, the risks communicators must recognize and the human judgment that remains essential.
The panel will include:
-
Langley Allbritton, AI Comms Consulting, advises on how to intentionally embed human judgment and ethics into AI communication strategies and workflows.
-
Magali Lola Corrales, vice president of PRSSA, offering the perspective of students and emerging professionals preparing to enter an AI-influenced workplace.
-
Mark Dvorak, APR, Fellow PRSA, former chair of the PRSA Board of Ethics and Professional Standards, grounding the conversation in the ethical principles that guide the profession.
-
Rashaad O’Neal, sharing real-world experience identifying and correcting inaccurate AI-generated information and its implications for digital identity and reputation.
Facilitated by PRSA Oregon Ethics Officer Rhonda Morin, APR, the webinar will examine the safeguards and professional judgment needed to use AI responsibly through the lens of the six core values of the PRSA Code of Ethics:
-
Advocacy: How can communicators advocate responsibly for their organizations and clients when using AI?
-
Honesty: What do accuracy, verification and appropriate disclosure require?
-
Expertise: What must practitioners understand before relying on AI-generated information or content?
-
Independence: How can communicators maintain objective professional judgment rather than deferring to an AI tool?
-
Loyalty: How do practitioners balance their obligations to clients and employers with their responsibility to the public?
-
Fairness: How can communicators identify bias, support inclusive representation and avoid harm?
AI may have disrupted how public relations work is produced, but it will never change the ethical principles or professional responsibilities that guide our profession. | |
Free for PRSA Oregon members and members of other PRSA chapters
$20 for nonmembers

Becca Mallery
Treasurer
PRSA Oregon Board | | | |
Becca joined the PRSA Oregon Board as an opportunity to give back to an organization that has helped her grow professionally. As Treasurer, she has enjoyed strengthening the chapter’s financial processes and creating systems that will hopefully make the role a little easier for future volunteers. One of her favorite parts of serving on the Board is collaborating with communications professionals from across Oregon who are always willing to share ideas and support one another.
“For me, communications is one of those professions where you never stop learning. PRSA has connected me with people who challenge me to think differently, share ideas, and continue growing. That’s what keeps me coming back.”
Outside of work, Becca enjoys spending time with her husband, Dave, and their five-year-old daughter, Elena. They recently took on a major home renovation project, so weekends are often spent building, painting, or tackling the next item on the ever-growing project list. She also enjoys traveling (especially to Kauai) and running her small web design business, Web Wizards.
“I really enjoy building systems that make things work better. Whether it’s improving communication processes at work or strengthening the Treasurer role for whoever comes next, I like leaving organizations better than I found them.”
